We just finished watching the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special on Disney+, and what a show it was. There were several hilarious moments, as is usual for this brand, while everyone tries to give Peter, Star-Lord, a Christmas to remember. It also features Kevin Bacon as the main gift for the Marvel hero.
While we don’t want to ruin too much of the story, there are a few fascinating MCU reveals you’ll want to see. There are massive spoilers ahead, so feel free to skip this article if you don’t want to know about them just yet. If it doesn’t matter to you, here are the secrets that appear in the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.
Top Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special reveals
We’re going to remind you again that there are massive spoilers ahead. You should only read about the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special reveals if you’ve already seen the show on Disney+ or if it doesn’t bother you to read about it before seeing it.
Mantis is Star-Lord’s sister
After his human mother died and his celestial father Ego was destroyed in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, never mind the loss of Gamora, Star-Lord feels pretty much alone. Sure, he has his companions, but that’s not quite the same as family or a close loved one.
One of the biggest MCU surprises in the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is that Mantis is the daughter of Ego, making her Star-Lord’s sister. It takes the entire show before she reveals it to him, but it’s the reason she wants to give him a special Christmas.
It’s a bit odd that she waited this long to tell him and that this didn’t happen in the comic books. We’re not sure why the MCU decided to bring this into the holiday special, but perhaps it will play a role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. It also explains why Ego kept her around for so long. Surprisingly, Star-Lord’s father didn’t introduce her as his sister. So was this perhaps a late decision made as a sudden plot twist for the Christmas show? We hope not.
Groot looks much older than we remember
Disney+ members have had several I Am Groot shorts to enjoy on the streaming platform. When we last saw Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, he had regrown into a teenager in the extended credits scene and also in Infinity War.
Now, he’s quite a bulky adolescent in the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. He’s packing some muscles now, and in some scenes, he actually looks like one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, most notably Raphael. It’s nice to see him back to true form, and there’s a good chance he’ll be an adult when we see him again in Guardians of the Galaxy 3.
The Guardians now own Knowhere
Do you remember the first Guardians movie with the massive floating skull as an intergalactic hub of activity? Do you also recall how Thanos destroyed it and everyone in it in Infinity War? Well, it seems like our heroes have somehow inherited or taken over the base as their own, as they’re seen flying out of it during a scene in the show.
Also, it looks like The Collector is still alive, as revealed in the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. Perhaps he was resurrected when the Hulk brought everyone back from the dead. Or Thanos didn’t actually kill him. Either way, it will be interesting to see if Knowhere plays a part in the next movie.
Did we see GoBots?
For those who don’t know, GoBots were once rival toys of the Transformers. When Hasbro bought the company that made this GoBot line of toys, they quietly vanished. Interestingly, Marvel once made comic books about the Transformers, but certainly not GoBots.
Now, there’s a scene in Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special where Drax sees someone dressed in what looks like a GoBot outfit. He loses it, as his cousin was once killed by one. It’s not something that was in the comics, but it does make us wonder if it means anything. Is it a joke about Hasbro buying out the company and eliminating the competition, or is it a tease about a Marvel x Transformers collaboration?
Still no sign of Gamora
When you watch Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, you’ll hear Gamora’s name several times. It’s clear that Star-Lord is still mourning his loss. When Thanos teleported his whole army to the future to battle the Avengers again in End Game, a younger Gamora appears who doesn’t know Peter at all.
She vanished after the battle, leaving Star-Lord wondering where she went and how he could re-win her love for him. If anything, all this mention of Gamora could mean it might be a pivotal plot point in Volume 3, which will be exciting indeed!
Are these all teasers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3?
While Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special was fun to watch, all these secrets make us wonder how many of them are teasers for volume 3. We encourage you to watch it on Disney+ and leave us your thoughts.
