So yesterday we covered an overall review of FS22 to give you an idea of how the base game works. Almost a year later, GIANTS released Farming Simulator 22 Platinum Edition on 14 November 2022 with plenty of new items, but mainly focusing on forestry and related productions. We decided to have a separate review for it, as there is so much added to the game.
In this review, we’ll start with the top features to look out for in Farming Simulator 22 Platinum Edition so you can see why we’re excited by it. Also, we follow it up with some gameplay elements to show what it’s like playing the game. Sit back and enjoy the ride!
Top 9 features of Farming Simulator 22 Platinum Edition
To start our journey with Farming Simulator 22 Platinum Edition, we want to share some of the top features you’ll enjoy in the game. You might miss it the first time around, especially with such a large map. Silverrun Forest is the new location in the expansion, and there’s plenty to do.
There are still farmlands in FS22 Platinum Edition
When you first see the map in the Farming Simulator 22 Platinum Edition, it looks like there are only forests everywhere. Yes, that kind of is the point of the expansion. You’ll make a fortune chopping trees and delivering them, but you can own some farmlands, too.
If you look at the southern end, you’ll notice that there are a few areas you can buy. With enough funds, you can eventually purchase farming vehicles and plant some crops for later harvesting. You’ll also see areas with grass you can mow.
New vehicles and tools
One of the top features added with the Farming Simulator 22 Platinum Edition is that you have a new series of Volvo vehicles to enjoy. On top of that, there are about 40 new vehicles and equipment added purely for the forestry pack and Silverrun forest. I suggest you browse the list to see what they can do before buying them.
You can tow logs
One of the frustrating points from FS19 was trying to get chopped logs loaded onto the back of a transport vehicle with a crane. While FS22 Platinum Edition makes it easier, you might not even need to waste time doing so. There are tow cables attached to the back of tractors that you can clip onto log ends, which means you can drive with them behind you on the road on the way to delivery. Of course, you can’t carry as many logs as with transport, but it is a simpler solution.
Buying the sawmill unlocks floating logs
Here’s another fun feature of the Farming Simulator 22 Platinum Edition once you buy the building. The sawmill is situated on a massive piece of land with a body of water near one of the conveyor belts. To offload your wood, you simply drop the logs into the water, and the belt takes them into the building to be processed. It’s certainly one of the more entertaining features in the expansion pack.
Spray painting trees
You’ll unlock some spray cans when you install FS22 Platinum Edition. While they look like they’re made for graffiti, it’s more than that. You can mark trees for later use, with different symbols and colours. Perhaps you want to use some of them at the sawmill while you have other production plans for others. It’s a great way to plan the forest area around you.
Working with metal is available
On top of one of the mountains, you’ll find an iron ore mine. There’s a pile of iron ore on one side, which you can then process into metal. While the Farming Simulator 22 Platinum Edition mainly focuses on forestry, you’ll need this resource for making other materials at a later stage.
Free vehicles at the iron mine
Fortunately, you don’t need to buy vehicles to work the iron. The game provides many of them free of charge, which means you can get started almost immediately. However, you can’t sell or own the vehicles, so it’s only made for that specific use.
Exciting production buildings
There are plenty of other production buildings in the town, so take your time and explore what all of them are and what they do. They’ll need materials from you if you want to make items to then sell at a wonderful price. I love that there’s a boatyard where you can make boats and sell them for high rates. It takes a while to get all the components into place, but it’s a fun hobby.
Take a ride for super strength
One last top feature of Farming Simulator 22 Platinum Edition I want to mention is the rollercoaster. It’s one of the areas you can buy and then repair. Once you do, you can actually ride the rollercoaster and have a look at the city. If you do this fifteen times, you’ll unlock super strength, letting you pick up any heavy objects by hand.
Gameplay elements
Alright, now that you’ve seen our top features for the Farming Simulator 22 Platinum Edition, it’s time to review the actual gameplay elements. Here’s what it was like playing the expansion pack.
How to access Farming Simulator 22 Platinum Edition
After you install FS22 Platinum Edition, you may not see the changes immediately if you don’t know where to look. While all the new vehicles are available on all maps, the one you’ll want to go to is Silverrun Forest. You can choose any difficulty, as long as you select that map to see all the features mentioned above.
Visuals
The graphics are stunning on the PS4, so I can only imagine how brilliant it must be on PS5. Watching the logs float to the sawmill to be processed is fun while seeing your boat come to life is another exciting factor. There are so many stunning locations, such as bridges in the mountains and the nearby flowing rivers.
Movement and controls
While loading and transporting logs in FS19 was a hassle, Farming Simulator 22 Platinum Edition makes it so much easier. You can still load them the same way, there are many other methods available for transporting them. You’ll need a proper working controller for maneuvering the cranes, as you’ll need to use many of the buttons and directions to operate them. You can even hire the train!
The city environment
The main city is south of Silverrun Forest. You’ll see plenty of buildings and vehicles in this area, and many of the former are production facilities. With the money you make, you’ll want to invest in as many of these as possible, as the products are often worth more than the logs themselves.
Working the forest
When you begin playing Farming Simulator 22 Platinum Edition on the Silverrun Forest map, you have a small base on the mountain with some starter vehicles. You can already begin cutting trees down and selling them to the highest bidder. However, you’ll want to focus on contracts that begin with transporting wood and progress to making production items later.
You can always set up another base later. While it won’t be a physical base, just leaving your vehicles at specific spots makes it easier for you to teleport there later when you switch vehicles. Just don’t forget to plant new trees in the areas you clear out so you can return to cut them later. Also, remember to check our review of the base game mentioned at the start of this review to see how seasons and other aspects work.
Final Verdict: Farming Simulator 22 Platinum Edition
Farming Simulator 22 Platinum Edition is a fantastic expansion to the base game. While GIANTS could have just added new vehicles to cut trees, it decided to do so much more. You have new quests, production buildings, vehicles and tools, iron mine and sawmill, a massive new map, and so much more! Now, all they need to do is add fishing to the equation with a fishing village map, and I’ll be elated!
