Welcome to the sixth part of our Silent Hill Retrospective, featuring the official Silent Hill novels published by Konami in 2006.
Silent Hill Novels 1 – 3 (2006)
Before I move to the next official game in the series, I’d like to note three Silent Hill novels published by Konami in the same year the movie was released. They were written by Sadamu Yamashita in Japanese and later translated into English online by several fans.
The novels received mixed reviews from Silent Hill fans. Some praised it for remaining loyal to the games and following the main plot. Others indicated that the writing was repetitive and sometimes flat, missing the essence of the Silent Hill theme.
The challenge comes in with conveying the same sense of dread that the games and movie did. While the latter have visual qualities, novels are left to the imagination of the reader. In that way, the writer has to find new ways to bring the vivid terror of Silent Hill to the readers’ minds.
