Red Dead Redemption Movie: Jack Black wants one after The Last of US HBO success

After the recent success of the Super Mario Bros. movie, Jack Black is keen to see more game-movie adaptations come to the fore. He’s seen the success and fan adoration as a result of HBO’s The Last of Us, and now he wants to see a Red Dead Redemption movie with a similar treatment.

Jack Black praises The Last of US HBO series

In a recent interview with BBC, Jack Black discussed how much he enjoyed playing Bowser in the Super Mario Bros. movie. During the discussion, he mentioned how much game-movie adaptations have improved, linking more accurately to the original sources. Black is a serious gamer himself, with a YouTube channel where he streams his latest gaming adventures.

He also went as far as praising The Last of Us HBO series. Expressing how much he loved the show, Black mentioned how close it was to the game. Even fans adored how many scenes they saw from the game in the TV series, which is the first show to be that close to a game’s plot and scenes.

Desire for a Red Dead Redemption movie

While talking about game-movie adaptations, Jack Black expressed a desire to see a Red Dead Redemption movie. 

“And there are some great games that have yet to be explored in television or film. Maybe there’s going to be a Red Dead Redemption movie? There should be, because I think that [has] just as good or [an] even better story than The Last of Us.”

There are many game fans that would equally love to see a Red Dead Redemption movie. If it ever comes to pass, maybe we’ll even have Jack Black to thank for it. There’s no doubt that it has an incredible story, but with the length of the game, perhaps a series would be a better option than a movie.

How game-to-movie adaptations have improved

If we take a look at the history of game-to-movie adaptations, gaming fans haven’t had the best of choices. Both Silent Hill movies were good, but they strayed somewhat from the main plot and some scenes thanks to creative liberty. We won’t even get into the use of Pyramid Head in a storyline he didn’t exist in within the gaming world (the fans have spoken enough about that.) While we had hopes that Return to Silent Hill would be better, the new casting and plot details for the movie revealed that it will be based on Silent Hill 2 but with some key differences.

The Resident Evil movie and TV series had close connections to the games, but ultimately, they had their own storylines. While one RE movie on Netflix adapted both of the first two games, there were still some notable differences.

For now, The Last of Us HBO series is the closest we’ve had between a movie and the game, although we’ve heard the Super Mario Bros movie comes in at a close second.
