Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will be coming out on two discs! That’s right; even if you buy a physical copy for the PS5, you’ll have 2 discs to play across.
We hope you didn’t miss the start of the Summer Game Fest 2023 that opened yesterday, with a fantastic new trailer and announcement from Square Enix and PlayStation. It shows that we can expect the game sometime in early 2024, while the end of the trailer makes sure we know it will be on two discs.
Here’s the trailer, followed by our discussion about the gamers’ reactions to the two disc announcement.
What Happened After Square Enix Announced Two Discs for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth?
So, having games launch on 2 discs isn’t a new thing. We’ve seen many massive titles follow this route, such as Red Dead Redemption, Final Fantasy VII Remake, and The Last of Us Part II. Of course, we’re talking about the previous generation of consoles. I don’t think many of us expected to see this happening on the PS5 just yet.
Well, it’s not really the news of two discs for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth causing a stir. Instead, it’s how much PlayStation and Square Enix are emphasising the point, making sure you know about it in the trailer, poster, and news.
How Gamers Reacted to Final Fantasy VII Rebirth 2-Disc Announcement
Just to give you some idea of the reactions from gamers right now about the two discs coming for FF7 Rebirth, here are some Tweets for you to look through:
Mixed Reactions
If you search for the term “two discs” on Twitter, you’ll notice that there are mixed reactions. Some found it outrageous that you need so many discs in this day and age of technology. Others find some nostalgia in it, remembering that the original Final Fantasy VII also has multiple discs for installation and play.
One thing is for sure: even if you download the game on your PS5 as the digital version, you better have plenty of space, as the file will be massive.
What is Final Fantasy VII Rebirth?
So while we’re going on about this new mania about the two discs, some of you may not yet know what Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is all about. We’ve made a big deal about FF Crisis Core lately, but not so much about Rebirth. Square Enix made announcements on the 25th Anniversary live stream and at the Summer Game Fest, so here are some details.
Rebirth is part of the Final Fantasy VII Remake project. It stands alone from the other games where you see characters like Cloud, Barret, Tifa, and Aerith head out from the beloved Midgar on a new adventure. They are searching for Sephiroth, a swordsman that they thought had died a long time ago.
Yoshinori Kitase, the producer of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, had the following to say:
We’re honored to bring players around the world early next year the next installment of this thrilling tale, FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH.
The party will embark on a new adventure, so players can enjoy this story even without any familiarity with the previous title or the original FINAL FANTASY VII. The vast and explorable world along with the newly evolved speedy battles are sure to provide a most exciting gaming experience to new adventurers.
We would, of course, like to invite returning players and longtime fans to watch our new trailer closely for glimpses of pivotal story moments that Cloud and his friends will confront.
The entire team has worked fervently with love and adoration for the world of FINAL FANTASY VII, reaching new heights of cinematic storytelling, immersive combat, rich exploration and more, and we can’t wait to share more details later this year.
We’re Excited to See This Long Adventure Appear on the PS5!
While the two discs announcement has us shocked and excited, we definitely can’t wait to get our hands on Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. We’ll keep our eyes on future announcements.
